Learning new Essbase calculation skills is one of those things that can deliver quick ROI by solving a few existing problems or it can revolutionize your entire budgeting and planning process. It’s not expensive and in most cases the environment is already in place.
But until recently there hasn’t been a course that pulls together the most useful intermediate and advanced Essbase calculation techniques and shows you how to apply them to build practical analytics that every company can use.
That’s the goal of MTG’s Advanced Calculations for Forecasting and Driver Based Budgeting. We want to help you acquire the next level of intermediate and advanced calculation skills and then we want to show you concrete examples of how you can apply them. If you bring your Essbase outlines we will even help you implement the new techniques on your database during class.
Course Description: For many companies the annual budget is the single biggest investment in improving business performance. Most companies’ budgets are adequate for financial control but relatively few can be used for powerful strategic planning. In addition, in most cases the process is more time-consuming and labor intensive than necessary. So how can we make the process more strategic and at the same time make it faster and easier? The answer lies in improving the calculation logic.
Essbase calculations can be used to:
- Reduce effort by providing automatic “baseline” forecasts as a starting point
- Implement more frequent reforecasts or continuous planning
- Link budgeting to strategy by focusing on strategic drivers
- Implement driver based budgeting
In this course you will learn the Essbase functions and structures that are most important for forecasting, projections and budgeting. Then you will apply your new skills to hands-on examples and exercises including:
- Workforce Expense
- Direct Costs
- Workforce Expenses
- Other Indirect Costs

- Rolling Forecasts And Continuous Planning
- Currency Conversion
The calculation techniques covered in this class are applicable in both Essbase and Planning. Students are invited to bring their own budget models and work on them during class. You can make tangible progress toward implementing the new techniques at your company.
